From the Citypaper article:
"The Metro Council has approved financing for a $585 million convention center by a vote of 29-9, scoring Mayor Karl Dean the biggest political victory of his first term in office.
After a few council skeptics made their final case, Metro’s legislative body decided to go forward and bankroll Music City Center, a project Dean first championed during his 2007 mayoral campaign as vital to staying competitive in the convention and tourism business and as a catalyst for economic growth."
I haven't heard much from my peers on this one. Sure it sounds great and I'm sure Nashville will bring in some tourist/convention money from it, but I haven't heard anyone talking about the convention space out at Opryland. They are consistently having large conventions. I know a good majority of that money stays in under the Opry umbrella (hotel and Opry "the mall that no locals go to" Mills). I think its a shame that the land that is being "condemned" in order to make way for the convention center is driving some business out. Progress hurts, just ask Gabby's.
Honestly...I don't know what to think.
Another great piece Ross! I know exactly what you are talking about. In the words of the immortal Amy Grant, "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."
ReplyDeleteI, for one, am a big fan of the convention center at Opryland. Just last year, my boy and I went there for a comic book convention. Top notch...especially the mall.
